Equivalency Certificates (Permits)

If a person wishes to carry on an activity related to transporting dangerous goods in a way that is not technically in compliance with the TDG Regulations, he or she can apply for a permit for the activity if it can be shown to provide an equivalent level of safety and compliance with the intent of the regulations. The PGAC has applied for and holds a number of these valid permits on behalf of members.

A listing of all valid permits (over 2000) is available for review on the TDG website. Below is a short list of the propane related permits:

SU 5931 (Ren 1) - This permit authorises Ragasco AS to sell, offer for sale, distribute, or deliver in Canada, and authorises any person to handle, offer for transport, transport, or import into Canada, by road or railway vehicle, by aircraft or by ship on a domestic voyage, composite cylinders under specific conditions. Permit Holder: Ragasco AS

SH7738 (Ren. 6) - The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations has redefined the term "small means of containment" to a capacity of 450 L or less. The permit allows safety marks required on small means of containment to be displayed on means of containment that are 454 L or less. For the purpose of this permit, the word "in" is defined as per section 1.3 of the TDG Regulations, Interpretation, the words "on", "in" or "by" are synonymous when they are associated with the defined term" road vehicle". Permit Holder: Valid members of the Propane Gas Association of Canada.

SH8629 (Ren. 2)  - This Permit allows the applicant to placard two long sides of their propane tanks. This permit is a temporary measure in anticipation of an amendment to the Regulations: Valid members of the Propane Gas Association of Canada.
